Sugar Palm Harvesting - Kampong Chhang, Cambodia
Mr Rhi harvesting sugar palm nectar. He’s 71 years old, and says he first started this work when he was 16. Still climbs the trees at dizzying speed. He’s far luckier than many in this line of work – a lot of farmers die or are permanently disabled falling from the trees, and traditionally, they weren’t taxed as they were deemed to be ‘already dead’.
In one of the photos, Ms. Lorn (Mr Rhi’s wife), is making palm sugar by boiling down the nectar collected in the bamboo tubes. It’s a long and laborious task. Selling the sugar is still very much part of their livelihood.
